Weather of nepal
A break in the weather has given New Zealand mountaineer Christine Jensen Burke the window she needed to summit the world's 10th highest mountain.
Timaru-born Jensen Burke is aiming to climb all 14 of the world's 8000-metre peaks.
Annapurna, which rises to 8091 metres, is the 11th 8000m peak Jensen Burke has summitted. Located in Nepal, it is the world's 10th highest mountain, but has the highest fatality-to-summit ratio of any of the 8000m peaks.
Crossing Annapurna off her list leaves just three to go - Shishapangma (China - 8027m), Nanga Parbatn (Pakistan - 8126m) and Dhaulagiri I (Nepal - 8167m).
Jensen Burke's teammate, Matthew DuPuy, posted a tracker message at 3.49am (10.04am NZ time) announcing the successful climb.
"Summit success! High winds didn't stop us! Chris [Burke] and I are crashing camp 4 again. C3 seems too far in this state," DuPuy wrote.
The duo along with a third teammate, Lakpa, took full advantage of a forecast weather window at the end of April/early May before weather conditions were expected to deteriorate, preventing any more attempts.
On her blog Jensen Burke said if they waited too long "big snows" would likely come and their chances would be gone for this season. "This is most likely our last chance this season to attempt the summit."
As their summit push progressed, DuPuy frequently posted updates on his tracker and posted his first summit push message on Saturday.
