Dhamala Ko Hamala with Balkrishna Dhungel

The Supreme Court ordered the government not to give amnesty of UCPN-Maoist leader Balkrishna Dhungel convicted in the murder of Ujjain Shrestha of Okhaldhunga. A constitutional bench of the apex court ruled that balkrishna dhungel, sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1998 murder by the Okhaldhunga District Court, could not be pardoned for the crime. It is noted that local people’s attempts to bring the forest fire under control have become a failure.

Bhattarai-led government had argued that balkrishna dhungel’s case should be dealt by the transitional justice mechanism, claiming that the matter was political in nature and Balkrishna Dhungel was granted amnesty by Baburam Bhattarai-led government who was convicted of the murder of Ujjan Shrestha of Okhaldhunga district. Against the decision, Shrestha’s sister Sabitri had filed a petition at the apex court demanding action against Balkrishna Dhungel as ordered by the Okhaldhunga District Court earlier. According to the Supreme Court assistant spokesperson Bishwaraj Paudel, a constitutional bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha and Justices Sushila Karki, Baidya Nath Upadhyaya, Gopal Parajuli and Om Prakash Mishra pronounced the verdict on Sabitri’s side.
