Police remove late King Birendra's statue installed in Nepalgunj

September 2nd, 2016 :
The half-figure statue of late King Birendra Shah installed at Dhambojhi Chowk in Nepalgunj that led to an altercation between the police and by pro-monarch supporters has been pulled down by security personnel on Thursday around midnight. An all-party meeting held yesterday decided to remove the former king's statue. The security personnel intervened as the royalists and supporters of Hindu state erected the bust by hoodwinking the administration. Police had initially given permission to an organisation named Rastrabadi Yuwa to hoist the national flag in the area.

"They (pro-monarch supporters) had said that they would hoist the national flag at the chowk but they installed the statue. This created tension in the area and after the all-party meeting decided to remove the statue, the police brought it down," said SP Tek Prasad Rai. The police had tried to remove the statue yesterday itself which led to a clash with pro-monarch supporters including cadres of Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and youths affiliated to Hindu outfit Shiva Sena. The police resorted to lathicharge twice to disperse the crowd.
