Dance has long been accepted as one of the most effective ways of burning calories and toning the body overall. But at the dance school, there are particular steps that are designed to impact specific body parts, according to Ghimire, who was trained in the technique from an institute in Central America. “My interest had first sparked when I saw what the practice did for this young girl, the daughter of a doctor,” Ghimire remembers. “She could barely move her arms and legs at first and I saw her improve and gain confidence before my eyes with each successive dance lesson.” Amazed by what he had witnessed, Ghimire—the current president of the Choreographers’ Association—decided to do some research to acquaint himself with the method, first looking up online resources and eventually taking up formal training.
Once established, the school saw a lot of interest from folks looking for a cure for various problems like hypertension, diabetes, back ache, and thyroid issues, among others. “We’ve had many cases in which students have been able to, if not cease, at least cut down their medication substantially,” Ghimire says. “One of our attendees, for instance, was diagnosed with sugar and thyroid problems at the same time and was spending thousands a month on treatment before. But he was able to function fully without medication once he started on regular classes.”The only one of its kind in the country, the dance school has been in operation for about two years now, and has had a steady flow of trainees in that time. The roots of the therapy itself can be traced back to the 1950s in the US, where dancer and therapist Marian Chace had founded the discipline.
